The short answer
The best Gameweek 1 differential is not simply the player with the lowest ownership. The player needs secure enough minutes, a useful role and enough upside to compete with the popular alternative.
Ownership changes quickly in deadline week, so this update focuses on differential candidates rather than freezing stale percentages from July. Before publishing or making your final transfer, check the live ownership in official FPL and keep only players who still fit your own differential threshold.

1. Cody Gakpo
Gakpo's £7.0m price is useful because it gives you a direct Liverpool attacking route below the premium bracket.
He scored in Liverpool's final pre-season match against Como and played with the strong side. The opening fixture at Newcastle is not ideal, but a differential does not need the easiest fixture if the role and ceiling are strong enough.

2. Christos Tzolis
Tzolis has gone from "wait for the final friendly" to a legitimate starting option.
He finished pre-season with one goal and six assists, including two Community Shield assists, and official FPL analysis expects him to start against Coventry.
His home fixture gives him arguably the best one-week ceiling on this list.

3. Maxim De Cuyper
De Cuyper is classified as a £4.5m defender but was used on the left side of Brighton's attack in the final friendly while Yankuba Minteh was unavailable.
Out-of-position defenders can be powerful because they keep defender clean-sheet scoring while receiving touches higher up the pitch.
The risk is obvious: one friendly does not guarantee the role.
4. Kinský
Goalkeeper differentials are usually less exciting than attackers, but Kinský gives you a £4.5m route into Spurs after emerging as their No.1.
The saving can fund a stronger attacker elsewhere, which is part of the differential's value.
How many differentials should you own?
Usually two or three well-supported differentials are enough.
An entire low-owned squad is not automatically clever. It simply increases the number of assumptions you need to get right.
Build around a strong core, then use one or two spots to attack upside.

Tzolis has the best GW1 fixture and Gakpo the best medium-term price point. De Cuyper is the aggressive defensive differential; Kinský is the structural budget differential.
Recheck ownership at the deadline because several of these players can stop being genuine differentials quickly.
