The short answer
The final Gameweek 1 template is much clearer than it was at launch.
Official FPL has identified Haaland, Bruno Fernandes, Gabriel and João Pedro as the four must-have players for the start of the season. That does not mean every good squad needs all four, but it shows where the strongest ownership and expert consensus is concentrated.
The final template spine
| Player | Price | Why he is template |
|---|---|---|
| Erling Haaland | £15.5m | Captaincy, history and huge ownership |
| Bruno Fernandes | £12.0m | Hull + Ipswich and elite role |
| João Pedro | £7.5m | Eight pre-season goals and strong fixtures |
| Gabriel | £8.0m | 209 points last season and multiple scoring routes |
| Bryan Mbeumo | £8.0m | Final pre-season form and expected striker role |
| Antonín Kinský | £4.5m | Budget starting goalkeeper |
| £4.0m promoted defender | £4.0m | Enables the premium core |
Ownership changes continuously, so use official FPL for the live percentages rather than relying on a number frozen in this article.
Haaland
Haaland was already in 71% of squads when official FPL published its must-have analysis on 14 August.
His appeal is not simply goals. He is likely to be the dominant captain in many early Gameweeks, which creates large effective-ownership risk for managers who go without him.
Bruno Fernandes
Bruno was in 48.5% of squads in the same official update.
Manchester United open against promoted Hull and Ipswich. His 2025/26 finish under Michael Carrick was elite, and he remains one of the safest routes to United's attack even after two recent pre-season penalty misses.
João Pedro
João Pedro is the value player holding the expensive structure together.
Official FPL says he has eight pre-season goals and two assists, while Chelsea have useful fixtures over the opening four.
At £7.5m, he is easier to fit than the premium midfielders and can still deliver premium-level short-term output.
Gabriel or Mosquera?
This is the most important template fork.
Gabriel costs £8.0m and scored 209 points last season.
But official FPL now says Cristhian Mosquera (£5.5m) has secured the role alongside Gabriel while William Saliba is injured.
Saving £2.5m can turn a weak fifth midfielder into a real starter.

Mbeumo has overtaken Cunha
Earlier preseason analysis leaned toward Matheus Cunha.
The final evidence has flipped that call.
Official FPL's final Scout Selection says Mbeumo currently has the better form and fitness, with three goals and one assist in his final three starts, and is expected to play up front while Sesko is unavailable.

Template does not mean best team
Ownership tells you where rank risk is concentrated. It does not tell you which player will score most.
A useful approach is:
- Own the premium players you believe are genuinely strong.
- Use two or three differentials, not eight.
- Avoid copying a player whose minutes you do not trust.
- Keep enough price flexibility to react after GW1.
Compare the template with the best GW1 differentials, three GW1 draft structures and best Gameweek 1 team.
OneFPL verdict
Haaland + Bruno + João Pedro is the strongest template attacking core. Gabriel is the premium defensive choice, but Mosquera creates the most important value alternative.
FAQ
What is the FPL template?
The template is the group of highly owned players appearing in a large share of teams.
Do I need all four official must-haves?
No. You can build an excellent squad without one of them if the saved money improves the rest of the team enough.
How many differentials should I own?
Usually two or three well-supported alternatives are enough for GW1.
