Why Gomes was useful at Wolves
Gomes regularly made tackles, interceptions, clearances and recoveries in a team that spent long periods without the ball.
Midfielders need 12 qualifying defensive actions to earn the extra two points. A player who reaches that threshold frequently can return points without scoring or assisting.
That gives Gomes a stable floor when he plays enough minutes.
Why the Aston Villa move creates uncertainty
Aston Villa generally expect more possession than Wolves.
More possession can mean fewer opportunities to make defensive actions. Gomes may still be Villa's leading ball winner, but the total number of actions available could fall.
This is important because defensive contributions use thresholds. Finishing a match with 11 qualifying actions gives a midfielder no extra points, even if the performance was defensively strong.
Minutes and role
The move should improve Gomes' chance of regular starts because Villa are rebuilding midfield.
