The short answer
The original version of this article asked whether Mamadou Sangaré (£5.5m) could translate his exceptional Ligue 1 defensive-contribution profile to the Premier League.
Gameweek 1 gave us the first positive competitive evidence.
Sangaré was one of Brentford's best players in the 3-0 win over Tottenham, dominating midfield and playing an important role in Brentford's attacking moves.
The Guardian credited him with two assists in its live report, while Reuters explicitly credited him with the assist for Brentford's second goal.
Because official FPL assist attribution can differ from football match-report assists, always use the final FPL game total for the definitive points haul.
What changed from preseason?
Before GW1, Sangaré's case was based on:
- £5.5m price
- Secure-looking midfield role
- Three goals and four assists for Lens
- Projected DefCon success in 19 of 32 Ligue 1 starts
- Strong underlying defensive actions
Now we can add:
- Competitive Premier League start
- Excellent performance against Spurs
- Attacking involvement
- Brentford clean sheet
- A team structure that suited his all-action role
The DefCon thesis remains the key
Official FPL calculated that Sangaré's Lens numbers would have met the midfielder defensive-contribution threshold in around 59% of his starts.
That remains his strongest long-term Fantasy route.
A £5.5m midfielder does not need an assist every week if he can regularly combine appearance points, DefCon points, occasional attacking returns and bonus.
The attacking upside may be better than expected
The Tottenham match showed Sangaré was not simply sitting in front of the back four.
He progressed play and joined attacking sequences.
That matters because the difference between a useful fifth midfielder and a genuine fourth midfielder is often attacking involvement.

Keane Lewis-Potter also costs £5.5m and scored against Spurs.
