FPL managers receive two sets of chips again in 2026/27.
Each half-season set contains:
- One Wildcard
- One Free Hit
- One Triple Captain
- One Bench Boost
The first set must be used before the Gameweek 19 deadline at 13:30 GMT on Saturday 2 January 2027.
Unused first-half chips do not carry into the second half.
The key rules
| Rule | 2026/27 position |
|---|---|
| Chip sets | Two |
| Chips per set | Wildcard, Free Hit, Triple Captain and Bench Boost |
| Total chip uses | Eight |
| First-set expiry | After the GW19 deadline |
| One chip per Gameweek | Yes |
| Free Hit in Gameweek 1 | Not allowed |
| First Free Hit in GW19 then second in GW20 | Not allowed |
| Second chip set | Refreshes for the second half |
The first-half planning problem
Managers often save chips for perfect opportunities.
The first set has an expiry date, so saving everything indefinitely can force poor chip use in December.
The solution is a flexible calendar rather than locking exact Gameweeks in July.
Chip planning table
| Chip | Earliest sensible window | Patient window | Trigger to activate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wildcard | After three to six Gameweeks of information | Major fixture swing before GW19 | Several structural problems |
| Triple Captain | Elite home fixture with secure minutes | Later promoted-opponent fixture | Premium captain has strong role and fitness |
| Bench Boost | Early season with 15 confirmed starters | Fixture-aligned squad before GW19 | All bench players have realistic minutes |
| Free Hit | Cannot be used in GW1 | A blank, disruption or concentrated one-week opportunity | Current squad is badly suited to one specific Gameweek |
Triple Captain watchlist
Official FPL highlights several first-half home matches against promoted clubs.
| Gameweek | Player | Opponent | Why it stands out |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | Bruno Fernandes | Ipswich at home | Penalties, set pieces and elite home output |
| 3 | Erling Haaland | Coventry at home | Highest goal ceiling in a favourable fixture |
| 7 | Erling Haaland | Ipswich at home | Another promoted home opponent |
| 14 | Bruno Fernandes | Coventry at home | Strong captaincy profile later in the half |
| 16 | Erling Haaland | Hull at home | Late first-half premium opportunity |
These are watchlist fixtures, not automatic recommendations.
Confirm before activating
- The player is fully fit
- The player is expected to start
- Workload is manageable
- Penalties remain secure
- The team is in good attacking form
- No stronger Double Gameweek is known
Should you Triple Captain early?
Advantages
- Avoids losing the chip through expiry
- Uses an elite fixture
- Reduces later planning pressure
- Takes advantage before European rotation intensifies
Risks
- World Cup return and early fitness concerns
- New-manager tactical uncertainty
- Better opportunities may appear
- Early-season team data is limited
OneFPL approach: Build the captain scenario in the OneFPL Planner but wait for final team news.
Wildcard strategy
The Wildcard permanently changes the squad and removes transfer-point deductions for the Gameweek in which it is active.
Good reasons to activate
- Several non-starting players
- Injuries across multiple positions
- The original structure is wrong
- Premium priorities have changed
- A major fixture swing begins
- Team value blocks normal repairs
Weak reasons
- One bad Gameweek
- One failed captain
- A rival had a large score
- One player is falling in price
- You are bored with the draft
Possible Wildcard windows
| Window | What you learn | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| GW3-GW5 | Early roles, minutes and price changes | Small sample |
| GW6-GW9 | Better data and European rotation patterns | More transfers may be needed before then |
| GW10-GW14 | Strong sample and fixture swings | Chip expiry approaches |
| GW15-GW18 | Maximum information | Little time to benefit before refresh |
The best Wildcard week is the week your squad needs a rebuild, not the week most managers choose in a poll.
Use OneFPL Fixture Swing to identify teams entering and leaving good runs.
Bench Boost strategy
Bench Boost adds all four bench scores to the Gameweek total.
It is strongest when:
- Both goalkeepers start
- All five defenders have realistic minutes
- All midfielders and forwards are fit
- The fixtures are acceptable
- The squad does not contain temporary placeholders
Gameweek 1 Bench Boost
Gameweek 1 offers unlimited transfers before the deadline.
That makes it possible to select 15 expected starters.
However, the opening week also contains:
- Late World Cup returns
- New managers
- Uncertain goalkeepers
- New signings
- Temporary pre-season starters
OneFPL verdict on GW1 Bench Boost
Use it only when every player is confirmed as a likely starter. Do not weaken the long-term squad only to create four average bench scores.
Free Hit strategy
The Free Hit provides unlimited transfers for one Gameweek. The previous squad returns at the next deadline.
It cannot be used in Gameweek 1.
Best first-half uses
- A Blank Gameweek
- A major postponement
- A one-week schedule mismatch
- A concentrated set of premium fixtures
- A squad with many unavailable players for one week
Poor uses
- Avoiding one difficult fixture
- Chasing last week's points
- Copying a content creator
- Fixing long-term structural problems
- Using it only because GW19 is approaching
Chip interactions
Only one chip can be used in a Gameweek.
That means:
- Triple Captain and Bench Boost cannot be combined
- Wildcard and Bench Boost cannot be used together
- A Wildcard can prepare for a later Bench Boost
- A Free Hit does not permanently change the squad
- A transfer plan should reserve separate Gameweeks
A flexible first-half calendar
| Period | Main action |
|---|---|
| GW1-GW3 | Observe roles and consider an elite Triple Captain only with strong fitness evidence |
| GW4-GW8 | First Wildcard window if the opening structure fails |
| GW9-GW13 | Target fixture swings and review European rotation |
| GW14-GW16 | Strong Triple Captain watchlist fixtures |
| GW17-GW18 | Use any chip with a genuine opportunity |
| GW19 | Final chance for unused first-half chips, but only one can be used |
The final line is critical. A manager carrying three unused chips into GW19 can save only one of them.
OneFPL chip workflow
- Add possible chip weeks to the OneFPL Planner
- Review at least six fixtures through OneFPL Fixtures
- Track injuries in OneFPL Injury News
- Keep alternative chip windows
- Confirm the deadline
- Activate only after final news
