The short answer
This article has changed substantially since the early pre-season version.
João Pedro is no longer on the avoid list. Antonín Kinský is no longer an uncertain Spurs goalkeeper. Final friendlies have resolved those questions.
The biggest Gameweek 1 traps now come from injuries, rotation and selecting players based on an outdated July role.
Final GW1 avoid list
| Trap | Why to avoid |
|---|---|
| Injury-flagged starters without confirmation | A good player cannot score from the stands |
| Man City rotation punts beyond the secure core | New manager + deep squad |
| Chelsea supporting attackers with unclear starts | João Pedro is safer than the rotating wide cast |
| Coventry forwards without team-news clarity | Awoniyi arrived late, Wright injured, Simms competition changed |
| Porro without clear fitness evidence | No need to force an expensive uncertainty |
| Players selected because of old pre-season ownership | Roles changed in the final weekend |
| £4.0m defenders who no longer start | Minimum price is useless without minutes |
| Promoted attackers with terrible GW1 fixtures | A cheap price alone does not create value |
1. Injury doubts you cannot cover
The final week is not the time to carry multiple red or yellow flags.
Use the updated OneFPL GW1 injuries and suspensions tracker and OneFPL Team News before locking the squad.
One injury gamble can be reasonable. Three makes your bench do too much work.
2. Manchester City rotation punts
Haaland remains the clear premium route. Gvardiol has also shown strong pre-season security.
Beyond the safer names, City have a new manager and enough depth to punish assumptions. Do not select a £6m–£8m attacker simply because he started the Community Shield.
Role security matters more than club strength in Gameweek 1.
3. Chelsea's supporting attack
João Pedro's situation is now much clearer: official FPL calls him a must-have after eight pre-season goals.
The uncertainty has moved to the players around him.
Chelsea have depth across the attacking midfield and wing-back positions. If your pick relies on "surely he starts", use the predicted GW1 lineups before committing.
4. Coventry forwards
Earlier drafts could reasonably treat Ellis Simms as the £5.0m starting striker while Haji Wright was injured.
Coventry then signed Taiwo Awoniyi on 17 August.
That late transfer changes the hierarchy. It does not mean Awoniyi definitely starts GW1; it means the position is less certain than before.

5. Expensive defenders with unclear readiness
A premium or mid-priced defender needs either exceptional role security or exceptional upside.
If Pedro Porro's fitness remains uncertain after a disrupted pre-season, there is no need to start the season with that question when several alternatives are fully ready.
Players removed from the avoid list
João Pedro
Removed. Eight pre-season goals, two assists and official must-have status have transformed the evidence.
Antonín Kinský
Removed. The Tottenham goalkeeper hierarchy is now much clearer and Kinský is a strong £4.5m option.
Arsenal's £5.5m centre-back
Changed. Cristhian Mosquera has secured the role alongside Gabriel while Saliba is out, according to the official final Scout Selection.
Safer GW1 rule
Ask three questions:
- Is he likely to start?
- Is he fit enough for meaningful minutes?
- Would I still want him if he had 2% ownership?
If two answers are "no", the player probably does not belong in your opening squad.
Compare the final decisions with the best GW1 team.
OneFPL verdict
Avoid stale information more than unpopular players. The biggest Gameweek 1 mistake is selecting a player for a role he had three weeks ago rather than the one he has now.
