Fantasy Premier League allows you to build a squad of real Premier League players and score points from their performances.
You begin with a budget of £100.0m and select 15 players.
Squad requirements
Your squad contains:
- Two goalkeepers.
- Five defenders.
- Five midfielders.
- Three forwards.
You can select no more than three players from the same Premier League club.
Before each deadline, choose 11 starters and four substitutes.
Valid formations
Your starting XI must contain:
- One goalkeeper.
- At least three defenders.
- At least two midfielders.
- At least one forward.
Valid formations include:
- 3-4-3.
- 3-5-2.
- 4-4-2.
- 4-3-3.
- 4-5-1.
- 5-3-2.
- 5-4-1.
- 5-2-3.
How players score
Players receive points through actions including:
- Playing minutes.
- Goals.
- Assists.
- Clean sheets.
- Goalkeeper saves.
- Penalty saves.
- Defensive contributions.
- Bonus points.
They can lose points through:
- Yellow cards.
- Red cards.
- Own goals.
- Missed penalties.
- Goals conceded by goalkeepers and defenders.
Our FPL scoring guide sets out the exact points value of every action by position.
Captain and vice-captain
Your captain normally receives double points.
Your vice-captain becomes captain if the original captain plays no minutes.
If the captain appears for even a short period, the vice-captain is not promoted.
Automatic substitutions
When a starter plays no minutes, FPL attempts to replace them with a bench player.
Substitutes enter according to your chosen bench order, provided the resulting lineup remains a valid formation.
Your substitute goalkeeper can only replace your starting goalkeeper.
Transfers
Managers receive free transfers during the season and can save up to five.
Additional transfers generally cost four points each. Our guide on whether a minus four is worth it explains when to accept that cost.
Free transfers are confirmed at the deadline. A transfer cannot be reversed after confirmation unless a Wildcard or Free Hit is active and the rules permit further changes before the deadline.
Player prices
Player prices can rise or fall as managers transfer them.
When selling a player who has increased in value, you keep only part of the profit.
For example:
- Buy at £7.0m.
- Current price rises to £7.2m.
- Selling price becomes £7.1m.
See how FPL price changes work for the full mechanics.
Chips
Managers receive two sets of:
- Wildcard.
- Free Hit.
- Triple Captain.
- Bench Boost.
The first set expires after the Gameweek 19 deadline.
Only one chip can be active in a Gameweek. Read our complete chip strategy guide before using any of them.
Mini-leagues
You can join:
- Private invitational leagues.
- Public leagues.
- Head-to-Head leagues.
- Overall and country leagues.
- Club-supporter leagues.
The official game now updates league positions during live matches, one of several changes for 2026/27.
Deadlines
Every transfer, captain change, lineup selection and bench order must be completed before the Gameweek deadline.
Check the deadline carefully, especially when the first fixture is played on a Friday — the 2026/27 season opens on Friday 21 August.
Your first-season strategy
Focus on:
- Players who regularly start.
- Strong captain choices.
- Avoiding unnecessary point deductions.
- Reviewing several fixtures rather than one.
- Keeping a functional bench.
- Remaining patient after a bad Gameweek.
