Fantasy Premier League managers receive two sets of chips for the 2026/27 season.
Each set contains:
- One Wildcard.
- One Free Hit.
- One Triple Captain.
- One Bench Boost.
The first set must be used during the first half of the season. Any unused first-half chip expires after the Gameweek 19 deadline.
The second set becomes available for the second half of the campaign. Chip rules are unchanged among the 2026/27 FPL changes.
Wildcard
The Wildcard allows unlimited transfers without point deductions.
Unlike a Free Hit, your new squad remains in place after the Gameweek ends.
Good reasons to Wildcard
- Several players are injured or no longer starting.
- Your squad has poor fixtures across multiple positions.
- Your preferred team structure has changed.
- You want to prepare for several upcoming Gameweeks.
- A major fixture swing creates long-term opportunities.
Poor reasons to Wildcard
- One bad Gameweek.
- A player you do not own scores a large haul.
- Your mini-league rival uses theirs.
- You want to chase one week of favourable fixtures.
Use the OneFPL transfer planner to build the intended post-Wildcard squad across several future Gameweeks before activating the chip.
Free Hit
The Free Hit allows unlimited transfers for one Gameweek.
After the Gameweek, your previous squad returns.
It is particularly valuable when:
- Many teams have no fixture.
- Your existing players face unusually poor opponents.
- A small number of teams have an additional fixture.
- You can target a one-week captaincy opportunity.
Remember that a Free Hit is temporary. It does not solve long-term squad problems.
Triple Captain
Your captain's score is tripled rather than doubled.
The ideal Triple Captain generally combines:
- Strong expected minutes.
- High attacking involvement.
- Penalty or set-piece duties.
- Favourable opposition.
- A low risk of rotation.
- More than one fixture where possible.
Do not activate it simply because a popular player has an easy home match. Compare that opportunity with likely future Double Gameweeks, and check the week's alternatives on the captain picks page.
Bench Boost
Bench Boost adds the scores of all four substitutes to your Gameweek total.
The chip works best when:
- All 15 players are expected to start.
- Your second goalkeeper has a reasonable fixture.
- Your bench contains genuine starters.
- Rotation risk is low.
- Several players have two fixtures.
The chip can become expensive if managers hold too much budget on the bench for several weeks merely to prepare for it.
Can chips be combined?
Only one chip can be used in a Gameweek.
You cannot combine:
- Wildcard and Bench Boost.
- Free Hit and Triple Captain.
- Any other two-chip combination.
A common strategy is to Wildcard before a future Bench Boost, but the two chips must be used in separate Gameweeks.
First-half chip planning
The existence of expiring first-half chips changes strategy.
Managers should identify potential opportunities before Gameweek 19 rather than reaching December with several unused chips and no clear plan.
Use the planner to mark:
- Likely Wildcard window.
- Potential Triple Captain fixtures.
- Bench Boost preparation.
- Gameweeks where a Free Hit could solve structural problems.
A plan should remain flexible. Injuries, postponements and team news can change the best window. Check the fixture difficulty table when choosing your windows, and read our beginner guide to how FPL works if you are new to chips entirely.
Plan your chips across multiple Gameweeks** before committing to any of them.
FAQ
How many FPL chips are available in 2026/27?
Managers receive two of each main chip — Wildcard, Free Hit, Triple Captain and Bench Boost — creating eight chip uses in total.
When does the first chip set expire?
The first set expires after the Gameweek 19 deadline.
Can unused chips carry into the second half?
No. Anything left unused from the first set is lost once the Gameweek 19 deadline passes.
Can two chips be used in one Gameweek?
No. Only one chip can be active in any single Gameweek.
Does the Wildcard squad stay after the Gameweek?
Yes. A Wildcard squad is permanent, unlike a Free Hit squad, which reverts to your previous team the following Gameweek.
