The short answer
FPL Cups are knockout competitions. Your adjusted Gameweek score is compared with one opponent, and the winner progresses to the next round.
Transfer costs count against your cup score.
How an FPL Cup tie is decided

The draw is random and a new opponent is assigned after each successful round.
Overall Cup and League Cups
The Overall Cup includes eligible FPL managers from around the world and begins later in the season.
A League Cup is attached to an invitational league. Its first round depends on the number of managers, with the competition scheduled backwards so the final is played in Gameweek 38.
What is a bye?
A bye moves a manager directly into the next round. It is used when the number of managers does not fit a complete knockout bracket.
In a mini-league cup, stronger qualifying scores can determine which managers receive byes.
Why can the Cup score be lower than my Gameweek score?
The Cup uses your Gameweek score after deducting transfer points. A team scoring 70 points after taking a -8 hit has a Cup score of 62.
