The short answer
An FPL assist is worth three points. It can come from a final pass, an effort that creates a rebound, forcing an own goal, or winning a scored penalty or free-kick.
The official FPL assist can differ from the assist recorded in standard football statistics.
FPL assist decision table
| Situation | FPL assist? |
|---|---|
| Final pass directly reaches the scorer | Usually yes |
| One defensive touch before scorer receives inside the box | Can be awarded |
| Two or more defensive touches | No |
| Scorer loses and regains possession | No |
| Shot is saved and teammate scores rebound | Yes |
| Shot hits woodwork and teammate scores rebound | Yes |
| Pass or shot forces an own goal | Yes |
| Player wins a penalty and teammate scores it | Yes |
| Player wins and scores the same penalty | No assist |
| Corner or throw-in is won | No assist for simply winning it |
Deflected passes
Under the current rule, intended destination is not always decisive when:
- The goalscorer receives the ball inside the penalty area
- There is only one defensive touch before the scorer receives it
If the scorer receives the ball outside the box, the defensive touch must not significantly change the intended destination of the pass or cross.
Rebounds and own goals
A player can earn an assist when an effort on goal is saved, blocked or hits the woodwork and a teammate scores the rebound.
For an own goal, the attacking player must have forced the own goal through the relevant pass or shot. Not every touch before an own goal qualifies.
