The short answer
An FPL automatic substitution happens when a player in your starting XI plays zero minutes in the Gameweek. FPL then uses your bench order, but the replacement must keep a valid formation.

How auto-subs are selected
| Situation | What FPL does |
|---|---|
| Starting goalkeeper plays zero minutes | Bench goalkeeper replaces him if the reserve played |
| Outfield starter plays zero minutes | First eligible outfield substitute is used |
| First substitute also plays zero minutes | FPL checks the second, then third substitute |
| First substitute breaks formation rules | FPL skips to the next eligible substitute |
| Starter appears for any recorded minutes | No automatic substitution |
A legal FPL XI must contain:
- One goalkeeper
- At least three defenders
- At least two midfielders
- At least one forward
For example, if you start only three defenders and one does not play, an outfield midfielder cannot replace him. FPL needs an eligible defender from your bench.
Why bench order matters
The first outfield substitute is normally your best emergency replacement. Consider:
- Expected minutes
- Fixture
- Attacking or clean-sheet potential
- Whether the player preserves your formation
A cheap player who is unlikely to start is a poor first substitute even if his fixture looks easy.
When are auto-subs confirmed?
They can be predicted during the Gameweek, but official substitutions are settled when the Gameweek is finalised. In 2026/27, final points lock at 09:00 UK time on the day after the last match.
