The short answer
If your FPL captain plays zero minutes, the captain multiplier moves to your vice-captain. If the captain makes even a brief appearance, the vice-captain is not promoted.

Captain and vice-captain outcomes
| Captain | Vice-captain | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Plays | Any outcome | Captain scores double points |
| Plays zero minutes | Plays | Vice-captain scores double points |
| Plays zero minutes | Also plays zero minutes | Nobody receives double points |
| Makes a late cameo | Plays | Captain keeps double points |
| Triple Captain plays zero minutes | Vice-captain plays | Vice-captain receives the Triple Captain multiplier |
Automatic substitutions and captaincy are separate. A captain who plays zero minutes may be replaced by a bench player, but the replacement does not inherit the armband. The multiplier moves only to the selected vice-captain.
The late-cameo risk
A captain introduced for one recorded minute counts as having played. Even a one-point appearance becomes two points as captain, while a vice-captain haul stays at normal value.
That is why expected minutes matter alongside fixture difficulty and attacking potential.
Before the deadline, compare availability and fixtures through OneFPL tools, then save both captain and vice-captain in the official game.
When is the change final?
OneFPL can predict the vice-captain promotion during matches. The official result is final when the Gameweek locks, which is 09:00 UK time on the day after the final match in 2026/27.
